Cinnabar Caterpillar on Tansy Ragwort (ColorChallenge Tuesday Orange)

in #colorchallenge7 years ago

Snapped this pic of cinnabar moth caterpillars on tansy ragwort at the river yesterday. Tansy ragwort is an invasive plant species in Oregon. The cinnabar moth has been introduced into the US to help control ragwort - its caterpillars feed exclusively on ragwort. The caterpillars striking orange and black coloration is a warning to potential predators, saying "Eat me at your own peril! Poison!" Cinnabar moth caterpillars store and concentrate alkaloids from ragwort, making them poisonous. The very striking black and red adult day-flying moths are also poisonous.

Lovely shot of the flowers... the caterpillars... a lil creepy, but cool anyway! ;)
