Vines are one type of plant that requires another structure (usually a tree) to achieve the best position in the competition to get the sunshine. The vines grow at the bottom of the forest so it only gets a little sunshine. Because the trunk is weak, it develops several special organs, such as tendrils, spines, or aerial roots to help it survive by "hitchhiking" on other higher and stronger structures.
