They are a type of deep water scallop and live at the depths of the sea. When a few get washed up they are usually spotted at sunrise hence the name. It could also be derived from the gorgeous colored hue of the shells that resemble the morning sun. I have been searching for one every time I come to the island but it’s becoming more and more rare. They say to find one is a blessing and to wear one shows your love and compassion, otherwise known as your aloha.
