Bosque Del Oso

Bosque del Oso is the name of the state wildlife area I camped at in Colorado. It's about 45 minutes west of Trinindad, CO.

The site has been mostly taken over by fracking and other industrial equipment. You can't go very far down the park roads without seeing some kind of drill or pump running, and the pipelines run throughout the area.

On the first day, I went hiking up one of the roads that was supposed to be only open to foot traffic. I had stopped to take a break in the shade off of the road when a truck went flying by. Apparently it was just one of the workers but it was shocking to see them driving so fast on the road. They would have no time to react if they ran into a pedestrian going around a corner.

A small stream ran next to the camp site. It was full of smaller trout, including a few browns that I caught. The fish were very spooky, and you would usually only get one cast into a small section of stream. The stream was about 3 foot at the deepest section near the campsite, and about 6-8 feet wide.

The hiking here was outstanding. Game trails made it easy to find your way up the mountains. We found many animal tracks including deer, elk, and bear. I foraged some wild bones also which the dogs are loving.

I was fortunate to meet some great camp mates there as well. On the first day I met a mother and son from Georgia, Lylith and Sam. They were ready to move to Colorado for good and were fed up with things in Georgia. Their dog Brownie was a mixed breed Beagle I think.

Jim was from Ohio. He had been down on his luck lately, but was determined to make it in Colorado. I adopted Freddy from him after a few days. His dog Bella did not get along with Freddy.
