Why i think college is waste of time and money

in #college8 years ago

Unless you study a field where a college degree is a must, such as enginerring, medicine, law etc, i honestly believe going to college and amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt simply isn't worth it.

This is even more so in the U.S where i believe college loans have to be paid of in full and can't even be ridden off by declaring bankruptcy.

So for young people (or any age) that spend four years at college and come out with a degree, two things can happen. They can be fortunate and get a job in their chosen field, even with the money they make, a percentage of that would for a very long time have to go towards the college debt, meaning they may never be able to get their own house.

Scenario number two which is much, much worse. They graduate and get that degree, but cannot get a job in their field. So they have to settle for a much lesser paying job in a field their not interested in, such as a retail job, and still have to pay off their college debt. This may mean they have to stay at home and live with their parents.

In any case, a college degree does not guarantee anyone a job. Some employers may prefer people with actual experience in that field and so, not hire college graduates.

Just an idea, why not save yourself a tonne of money and save four years which you can spend doing other things, like getting real life experience in various jobs. And instead of going to college to study in that field, try teaching yourself, and see if an employer in that field will put you on and teach you themselves.
