Metamorfik hareketler ile zamanla kireçtaşı oluşur.Kireçtaşı ise ısı ve basınca maruz kalarak mermeri oluşturur.
Bileşiminin %90'ı kalsiyum karbonattan (CaCO3) oluşmaktadır.
Renkler çoğunlukla beyaz ve grimsi şeklindedir.
Yabancı maddeler nedeniyle sarı, pembe, kırmızı, mavimtırak, esmerimsi ve siyah gibi renklerde de görülebilirler.
Ülkemizde İzmir, Kütahya, Yozgat, Gebze, Bursa, Afyon, Niğde, Bilecik, Koçhisar, Balıkesir, Muğla, Elazığ gibi bölgelerde mermer yatakları bulunur.
