What is a v-nickel?

in #coins8 years ago

I got this v-nickel in a ⅔ off bucket at a coin show. I am not a big fan of v-nickels and I prefer to collect buffalo nickels over these but v-nickels have an interesting history.

They came after the shield nickels which didn’t strike well in the mints so they needed replaced. The v-nickel shows the roman numeral V meaning 5 and was going to have 5 notches on the edge so blind people could tell it is not a 3 cent or 5 dollar piece but the feature was removed before production began. During production of this coin the 3 cent nickel was discontinued because the 5 cent nickel was easier to use.
