Wow this is a very beautiful post, I'm so sorry for your loss although it has been 17 years already.. That lady in the store feels like she was an angel to give you that book to get you through the painful moments. 40 days of fighting and 40 pages of reading, it was truly yours at the moment it was put there..

I'm curious what is written in the book, maybe you can (like cici also mentioned) write about the book in the future when you feel like it :)
