Coca-Cola
reveals total annual plastic packaging consumption (Plastic News)

  • As part of a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 31 companies reveal how much plastic packaging waste they create in a year.
  • Coca-Cola tops the list at 3m tonnes of plastic packaging waste, followed by Nestle at 1.7m tonnes.
  • The full report can be downloaded here.

Analysis & Comments

  • The report adds some perspective to the sheer volumes of plastic waste created by individual firms, as well as the growing momentum to become “greener”.
  • However, of the 150 companies who have signed up to MacArthur’s global commitment to reduce plastic pollution, the majority still refuses to publicly disclose figures on their own plastic packaging production (including Pepsi Co, H&M, L’Oréal, Walmart and Marks & Spencer).
  • For those interested, the report gives a detailed overview of the individual signatories (both businesses & governments) and their commitments/ actions to reduce packaging waste.
  • Some of the reports highlights include:
  • Consumer goods companies and retailers committing to increase recycled content in their packaging to an average of 25% by 2025, compared with the current global average of just 2%.
  • Leading businesses and governments will end the use of problematic and unnecessary plastic - including PVC and single-use plastic straws and carrier bags - many of them by the end of this year.
  • 40 brands and retailers are piloting or expanding reuse and refill schemes.

Coca Cola has to take this issue into account as more and more funds are investing in ESG friendly companies

Here's a simplistically BRILLIANT idea (if I may say so myself ;) How about the new revolution? That is, "blockchain recycling". Remember the old days when you brought bags and bags of used cans and bottles to the supemarket, fed them into the recycling machine, and got $0.05 for each on? Well, instead of the payout in cheap metal "fiat trinkets" , with "blockchain recycling" you will get BOTH the $0.05 as WELL as $x.xx of the new RCL coil ("Recycle coin").This not only INCREASES the traditional payout of $0.05 USD, but also introduces the additional incentive of INVESTMENT, as the RCL crypto will then be sold on the market (like all the other). You could easily extend this on the marketing end of things by including a charity component to the coin. That is,airdrops could be done to fund humanitarian projects for the homeless. This means that the traditional "bum collecting empty cans on the street" could take on a whole new meaning. Now is that an idea, or what???

This is actually a great idea 💡 !!!
Do you know if any project has ever thought of doing so? On Steem we have @cleanplanet doing something similar (through upvotes for now but why not imagine future tokens?).

Well, @reko used to do his "Free The Food" series. That would be the sort of "humanitarian" activism program which would work well with RCL ("Recycle Coin"). On the MARKETING end of things the oppoortunities would be VAST (ex. plastic cleanup (terrestrial and oceanic), food recycling, etc. A cryptocurrency would help MOBILIZE the people most affected by these problems, and give them SOME sense of HOPE that if they may be able to climb out of the abyss through consistent work. Like what percentage of those who are "just on the edge of the down-and-out zone" could POTENTIALLY be lifted out of that condition with a "hand up" in the form of a crypto which ENABLES them to build wealth to get them back on track in a few months? This would be ESPECIALLY helpful for recently unemployed people, INSTEAD of having to face the degrading conditions of government handouts. Honest work incentivizes people, and I believe that crypto finally makes such incentivizing programs implementable.

Very interesting and detailed report. I just read the pages about CocaCola,Pepsi and Nestle. The interesting question will be if the companies can achieve their goals to reduce plastic waste. I't wont be easy to increase the recycling from 2% to 25 %.

Indeed but actually if this is a goal for the company, this is quite easily achievable.
Recycled plastic is more and more lucrative for recycling companies and is becoming cheaper as ever.

@vlemon, At one place world is trying to avoid the Wastage Of Plastic at other place companies are producing the Plastic Wastages and in my opinion it's really unfortunate aspect.

Yes but through pressure (civil one), they understand that to sell they have to do something about it. Which is good to reorient capitalism a bit.
