A recent study by Miami University researchers shows that people on higher floors are more willing to take financial risks. Dr. Sina Esteky, who is in charge of the study, said: “When you stand in a higher place, people’s subconscious will have an impact on the subconscious, and this powerful sense of power will lead to more risk seeking behavior.
In this study, the researchers analyzed data from more than 3,000 global hedge funds. They correlated the level of fund fluctuations with the company's building floors, ranging from the first floor to the 96th floor. Their analysis shows that there is a correlation between rising floors and the volatility of the fund.
They also conducted experiments to allow participants to make betting decisions when the glass lifts of high-rise buildings rise or fall. Those contestants who have risen to the 72th floor are more likely to choose high-risk lottery tickets, while those who are on the decline are inclined to choose conservative lottery tickets.
Esteky explained that while these findings suggest that people on higher floors are more willing to take financial risks, this altitude effect disappears when participants are told that the floor will affect behavior. When people do not see them on a higher floor, for example in those without a window view, this effect disappears.
