My most memorable job interview /

Let me introduce to all by telling my successful story

It happened during the final year of my engineering degree. Placement season had started and all the dream companies had started looking for some fresh “meat” in our campus. There were 3 esteemed companies which came every year and hired the most number of students, say 20–30 in one go. (TCS, Infosys and bulk hiring companies never used to visit our campus.)

Out of these 3 esteemed companies, I was already placed in 2 of them and hence, there was a lot of pressure on me to not attempt for 3rd company. But I convinced my TPO to at least let me help other students in clearing their written round. It so happened that day that even though my friend’s answer matched with mine, they selected me for technical interview and not them. I was shocked and didn’t know how to face my friends or my TPO.

Not just this, I was really not in a mood to stay for the interview as well. I was having a bad phase, I broke up with my then boyfriend recently who was in the same college and things were getting pretty complicated and messy on that day. We had a big fight a few minutes before the written and then he came to congratulate me and tell me that I should got for technical interview but who was he to tell me this. I was in my own ego. So I rather consulted a trustworthy faculty who advised me to go for interview and tell them clearly that you are selected in 2 companies already.

I did the same thing. I was the last candidate to be interviewed. I went in and as soon as he asked me, “Tell me about myself”, I told him that I have been selected in 2 companies and their package is more than that of your’s. I will definitely go for that one. I told him every reason as to why I even attempted written round and all. Unfortunately, none of this seemed to work because he started liking my honesty. So he told me to solve a fun puzzle. It was a pretty complicated one and I was hearing it for the first time. So I though, “Ok, what the heck. I will not solve it. I will quit in between and then he will not select me.“

For the next few minutes, I told him some 3 or 4 times, “I don’t know what to do next. I don’t think I will be able to solve this.” Each time, he only smiled and gave me one hint and told me to proceed. He kept on helping me until I finished solving it. He then asked me to evaluate my own performance. I was frustrated by then and so I told almost rudely, “I could have done better.”

He simply smiled and told, “My dear, you are the first candidate who has solved this today and that also in a record 11 minutes. Since the time you started, I observed your approach and I was hopeful that you would do it.”

I was surprised and was wondering what to say next. I had tried to fail in the entire interview and yet this man never gave up on me. He continued, “I don’t care which company you join, but from my side, I really want you to join us. It will be fun. You are up for the HR interview. You can leave now.”

I thanked him and got up to leave when he called out my name. I turned back to look at him and said, “Yes Sir?”.

He said, “You know what? Congratulations and Welcome to the company. I know you will clear the HR round easily.”

What I later noticed was that he had written some very kind words on his copy of my Resume. When they select someone, they give the same copy to the next interviewer and so on! So he knew that HR will already have a look before he will start interviewing me.
