Why I Use Simplified Chinese Characters on Steemit
I currently have two Steemit accounts, one to write in English and one to write in Chinese. I started learning Chinese this year, so I use Steemit blogging as a way to practice writing simple posts along the lines of "TAIWAN HAVE MANY CAT. I LIKE CAT" and "TODAY I GO MUSEUM. IT IS FUN."
However, while I live in Taiwan and study Taiwan's preferred method of Chinese Writing (traditional Chinese characters), I write my Steemit blogs in Simplified Chinese. This is for a few reasons that I want to clarify, since most people in Taiwan ask me why I don't post in Traditional Characters. As a disclaimer for anyone from Taiwan, I do practice reading, hand writing, and flash cards in Traditional Characters; this post is only about posting on Steemit.
Reason 1 - Broader Audience
Statistically, more Chinese speakers can read Simplified characters, so the reach of posts written in Simplified Characters should theoretically be higher.
Reason 2 - Targeting
My goal is that people in China are able to read the posts I create. Since I am writing a lot about experiences in Taiwan, I would rather have people from outside Taiwan read it than people inside Taiwan.
Reason 3 - Reading Practice
I am learning Chinese so that I can better understand how China affects the world. There is a lot of interesting news and discussion in Simplified Chinese, and I want to be able to read it. So writing posts in Simplified Chinese is one way to practice that.
That's it! I believe there is value in learning both. Cool!
