The Great Wall, the Gobi desert and the Fortress, where the ancient wars had taken place, capture our imaginations and our hearts. So I made a trip around Western China and boarded on Jiayu Pass, which is known as "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven". Its panoramic view is so impressive and unforgettable as if such heroic stories just happened yesterday!

Jiayu Pass was first built in the 5th year (1372) of the Hongwu reign in the Ming Dynasty. Today, it becomes a world cultural heritage and a national relic protection unit.

IMGP3666.jpg
Jiayu Pass, the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven, is not only the western end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty but also an impregnable military defence system.

IMGP3629.jpg
The Great Wall of Jiayu Pass contains western, eastern and northern parts, which is about 60 kilometres in length. The platforms, strategic posts and castles spread all over the place, making up the full military defence system.

IMGP3670.jpg
Jiayuguan Fortress had a relatively ecological environment. It was not only a military defence system but also including living areas for the generals and soldiers.

IMGP3655.jpg
Jiayu Pass was a vital passage of the famous Silk Road. It's the joining place of the cultures of the Silk Road and the Great Wall.

IMGP3659.jpg
There is also a Guandi Temple, a tribute to Guan Yu who is even called "the Military Sage", blessing and protecting our soldiers in the wars.

IMGP3660.jpg
There is a theatre pavilion nearby. The generals and soldiers might have a rest and enjoy the entertainments after their training.

IMGP3680.jpg
Fortunately, I have the opportunity to enjoy a special time on this ancient fortress in the sunset.

IMGP3694.jpg
It is surrounded by infinite deserts. You may also find some camels here.

Mandy's Classroom

The term of 关照 is often used to express our greetings for each other. However, do you know its origin? 关照 was first used in Jiayu Pass, an important transportation hub in Ming Dynasty. Only passengers those who carried 关照, just like the passport nowadays, could go through it.

After hundreds of years, you may still be able to get 关照 from the officer at the gate.
