[STEM小故事 #06]死記硬背 VS STEM教學

有一天動畫課,有兩位男孩子特別早到,並且其中一位更特意買了一支道地綠茶給我喝。我特意去問他們,為甚麼這麼早來到?

他們回答:「那邊很悶,要死記硬背。所以早點走,過來這裡。」

我問:「那邊,即是甚麼的意思?」

他們回答:「那邊學PhotoShop,是學校安排的課程,但要死記硬背很多步驟,好悶。」

啊...... 「我明了」

這幾年推行STEM教學時,學校或家長們最初的反應是.... 「STEM 是不是學電腦?」或者,兒童編程 + 機械人 + LEGO 太過盛行,STEM成了補習班 或 編程課的招生方式。

我昨天回家,到家的電梯海報換了遊輪假期,但我想也想不通,為甚麼要加上「STEM」或「STEAM」??? 跟著朋友 @edwardchan 說「這是招來。」

「死記硬背」與「STEM」學習,其實是不能二分,必須兩邊一起並行。不是「這邊」與「那邊」,而是「相輔相乘」。

我知道「STEM教學」是走著「活動教學」方向,課堂會有較多互動,但這是很考驗導師的「活動教學」功夫,不是做好了課程,有了大綱,便代表可以走「STEM」。

「導師培訓」是STEM教學中,比培訓學生更為重要。其實,若學校沒有能帶起學生互動能力的老師,不如不走STEM。正如,若 @steemstem 只有著一個又一個的教程,但沒有指引怎樣於STEM課堂上互動實行方式,那其實也是空談,只有 STEM 的名號,而不是STEM。只是一般「數理化科學」教程。

推行STEM時,學校或導師們,應該走「融合方式」,而不是「排除舊方式,硬套新方法」。

我舉一個「死記硬背」的最強最強例子 「乘數表」:

很多外國人也想知道「華人數學比較好」的特點。我覺得必須要歸功於將「乘數表」娛樂化,竟然有人想出「九因歌」,可以透過唱 或 朗讀方式,演說出來。「九因歌」絕對是當中的「絕學」! 到今時今日,縱使十多年數學教育全都忘記,但「乘數表」應該仍念念不忘。

周星馳的「功夫」電影中有一句話「天下武功唯快不破」,「能快」不是因為速度,功夫打鬥最考是反應,「能快」是因為熟練。

華人數學根基,因著「乘數表」基礎,加上「九因歌」背口訣,全記在腦海中。之後,再做任何數學互動時,便會更加得心應手。

推行STEM學習的老師,若能嘗試走融合方向,學生便會更容易理解。

在我們的編程課 及 動畫課,我相信要記的步驟並不會少於Photoshop,但若STEM教學,仍像「說明書」,那不如不做STEM,返回原本的學術模式更好。
