#66: A City A Story Photo Weekly Contest #17 - Ancient, Spooky Houses In Coorg, India

in #citystory6 years ago (edited)

Last year I had visited Coorg which lies in the state of Karnataka of India. It's a small hill station that has a lot to offer to nature and peace lovers. On top of my 'must-visit' spots was the Madikeri Fort. This fort comprises of a museum, a church, green garden with sculptures and flowers, a small palace and lot of ancient houses.

Unfortunately, none of these are being maintained well by the government. There are all kinds of mosses growing on the walls of the fort and the houses have damp ceilings, broken window and doors. But looking at the architecture of the houses, one can imagine how beautiful and magnificent it would have looked in it's early days.

The fort was built in the 17th century by Muddu Raja, who was the King then. He built his home - a small palace inside the fort itself. His entire house was made of mud! He lived there along with his family and servants till the fort was captured by Tipu Sultan who further renovated it. Since then the property has been passed from one hand to the other and finally lies in the care of the government.

Beside the king's house are the ministers and servants quarters. They looked very tiny as compared to the palace beside them. Again, I noticed that these houses too were only made of mud and didn't even have a proper roof. All the houses had the same structure and spread all around the palace. For some reason, the place will give you the creeps. I tried to take a peek through the broken windows. All you'll see inside are few tables and cupboards covered in cobwebs.

Although all the houses were of different sizes, each of them had a similar veranda. Some of the houses were colored yellow, some blue, some red while others were only whitewashed.

[This one is my favorite!]

If you ever plan to visit Coorg, make sure to include the Fort in your list. The proud walls of the fort still stand strong and high despite the negligence by the government.

I've been to Coorg once, really long time back when I was studying in Bangalore. What a beautiful place right? We stayed in a really off the beaten track home-stay cottage in the middle of a plantation and it was splendid. I think I pretty much visited all the important spots but somehow I missed this fort. Such gorgeous blue windows!

Yes! I fell in love with the place too. If you ever go to Coorg again, pay a visit to the fort. I'm sure you'll love it. There's a museum and a church inside as well.

All the house are beautiful, thank you for sharing👍👍👍
