The Begijnhof courtyard was originally built in the 14th century as a sanctuary for a Catholic sisterhood. Today the residents find the courtyard as a sanctuary from the bustling noise of Amsterdam traffic, while it's historic significance still draws tourists to view it's ensconced chapel and a statue of Jesus bearing his heart.
