I visited Kochi 1 year ago and I really felt out of place. I was in the tourist area, then I moved to the center and I still felt out of place, too big and too many Malls. I didn't find a "landmark", something that could tell me about the identity of this city.
I went there with a group of friends, so we all had a great time together. And did not have the opportunity to feel out of place.
But there were many other times in Indian cities when I kinda felt "out of place" or just uncomfortable. That's why it was so great when I found cool places to chill out.
