Pampatar

It was founded in 1571 by Governor Marcelo de Villalobos, its initial name being Puerto Real de Mampatare which has been changing until it became Pampatar, its current name. It is part of the Maneiro Municipality, it is also a Free Port, like Porlamar, although it still has its fishing fleet.

Among its attractions is the Castle of San Carlos de Borromeo which is built on the site of the original fort that was destroyed in 1662 when the Dutch burned Pampatar. In colonial times, the main buildings, the city and the port were protected by this castle that faces the sea.
