Singing in the Rain: still entertaining

Few musicals have created such a pop culture impact than Singing in the Rain. And although I'm not a fan of musicals, I did enjoy it knowing more about Hollywood.

At the eve of talkies, two of its biggest stars release a new movie. But on the set of their next one, The Jazz singer gets released and is a wild success. Unfortunately for Lina Lamont, her impossibly high-pitched voice creates a problem...

Notwithsanding the big no-nos we see (Gene Kelly moves incredibly fast and obsessively on Debbie Reynolds), I found the movie to still be entertaining, but also educating. Indeed, so many stars from silent movies couldn't make it to talkies because of their shrilling voices. But you then realize why there were so many musicals.

The filming of the talky was hilarious. Lina Lamont is so dumb that she doesn't realize where her microphone is so we hear 1/2 her lines; she also hit it constantly with her pearls. And the sound desynchs from the image, making for hilariously bad results.

Finally, the musical numbers are memorable. Make them laugh, Good Morning and the title number made a lasting impact on people's imagination. The 2nd one was used for a Viagra in Canada since you can't talk about what it does.

In short, this movie is worth your time. Despite some outdated tropes, it will make you laugh.
