in #cigars7 years ago (edited)

Do you know what cigars can do to the human body, especially more than 10 cigars per day? Perhaps you might end up like Richard Overton, and have to live one hundred and eleven years..., and counting.

Every year, for the past few anyway, I see an article about Richard pop up, and chuckle to myself, "he is still alive?!" Fellow cigar lovers root for Richard, it gives us much needed "ammo" against the media, FDA, and the "academic" propaganda onslaught against cigars, as they lump them in with cigarettes and other chemically altered tobacco. In fact, I believe cigar smoking, when done properly as it was intended, will most likely prolong your life and lead to a healthier way of life, but i'll save that for another blog.

Here are a few facts about Richard Overton I put together:

  • Richard Overton was born on May 11, 1906 in Bastrop County, TX.
  • He started smoking cigars at the age of 18.
  • Richard smokes 12 to 18 cigars a day. He likes keeping three cigars in his shirt pocket for easy access.
  • In World War II, he served in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945 with the Army’s all black 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion. His tour of duty included Peleliu, Anguar, and Iwo Jima.

  • After the war, Richard returned to Austin, he worked in the furniture business and as a longtime aide at the Capitol, and has lived in the same home ever since.
  • His favorite foods are hamburgers, catfish and gravy, corn, and macaroni and cheese.
  • Overton is the subject of a 2016 documentary, Mr. Overton, in which he is interviewed about his daily routine, thoughts on his longevity, and his military service.
  • He was 82 years old when his wife, Wilma, died in 1988.
  • Richard adds whiskey to his coffee every morning, he claims it helps keep is muscles tender.

The following is from the Statesman Journal:
Now Overton soaks up the celebrity status he’s earned in his twilight years. In 2013, he met President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House, he’s been featured in “Cigar Aficionado: The Good Life Magazine for Men” alongside Vince Vaughn, and in Overton’s living room there’s a framed camouflage San Antonio Spurs jersey made for him with the number “110” in honor of his last birthday.
