Cigar Shapes - A "Simple" Guide
Parejo, perfecto, figurado, presidente, huh? The newer cigar smoker might ask, what do all these terms mean? Cigars come in a vast amount of shapes and sizes, it can be overwhelming to figure out what is the proper term for a cigars shape. I will try to keep this guide as simple as possible.
Cigar Shapes
There really are only two different categories of a cigar shape.
1. Parejo
The most common and recognizable cigar shape. This is the standard, plain-jane cylinder, the normal. No Fancy tapers or angles. (pronounced pair-aye-hoe)
The only other variances a parejo may have are some "upgrades" like a box press, shaggy foot, closed foot, or pigtail.
2. Figurado
This is every other cigar shape that is not a Parejo.
The most common are:
Torpedo - Has a long gradual taper.
Belicoso - Tapers sharply at the head, with usually more of a rounded tip vs. sharp and long like the torpedo.
Pyramid - Has the longest taper which starts at the foot (lighting end) of the cigar.
The torpedo, belicoso, and pyramid are very much alike.Perfecto
What I like to call the cartoon shape cigar. Tapered on both ends and widest in the middle.Presidente
Tapered at the head, and closed, or almost closed foot with a nipple shape.
All of the above figurado shapes you will see often listed in cigar catalogs, online, and shops.
Less common Figurado shapes:
Salomon - Basically a very large perfecto but with a flush-cut foot.
Diadema - A slightly longer and thinner Diadema
Chisel - A torpedo shape, but the tapered end looks as though it was smashed down
Culebra
Meaning "snake" in Spanish, a Culebra is three cigars braided together. When separated they keep the twisted odd shape. No they are not suppose to be smoked still tangled together, they are meant to be separated and shared.Exotics
Any extreme shape mostly for show but still smokable. Some examples are The Sopranos limited edition set, a Drew Estate "egg", and my baseball bat a friend and cigar maker rolled for me.
This list is not exhaustive, some smokers refer to cigars in terms that describe a shape with a certain size. 😨
Confused yet?
So are many seasoned cigar aficionados, the problem lies in the fact that some manufactures and smokers specs vary a little, and by pure habit many interchange the shapes when talking or writing. There isn't some official and universal cigar shape dictionary.
Basically, all a cigar smoker needs to know is Parejo and Figurado.

This was awesome, my son loves cigars and now I have some info on the types. Thanks
Your welcome, is your son on Steemit?
I have one on here @hilarski is my oldest son. The one that smokes cigars never does any social media. I have two sons at opposite ends of the spectrum and me in the middle.... lol @gregm
Hey that is awesome! @hilarski is well known here, but of course you know that!
Hope you have a great day!
Very interesting. I learned something new today. Thank you.
Your welcome!
That baseball bat is quite impressive! The roller deserves a round of applause!
Agreed! I have seen crazy ornate shapes and designs... one of these days I will get around to collecting some.
I have never had a Figurado now that I think about it!
Time to give a few a try!
😤
Yes I think so! Maybe this weekend!
Oh awesome post Greg
I need to get the Sopranos set, they look great
Also I smoked a Drew Estate Egg a wile back, that thing kicked my butt at the halfway point. The triple twist came out of the cigar rollers of old, they only got to take home one free cigar a day.
Haha, oh the egg.. it does look cool, but not sure I would smoke one. I have heard they are pretty strong, I doubt the best tobacco is used for them.
I wonder how much that Sopranos set goes for these days... I have two of the large "Boss" torpedoes, I think they sell for about $20 each now.
Yes, you are right about the Culebra and getting around the one cigar per day.
The egg uses a blend of tobacco from 4 different continents and it is good tobacco but not the best.
It starts out very nice, it's a cool and creamy smoke with heavy cedar and earth tones with a touch of herbal. As soon as you get into the "egg" part it soon turns to stone. You are puffing about a 3 1/2 inch section of tobacco there and it gets quite robust, more so for me since I tend to be somewhat aggressive with them.
Sounds great at the first part! Haha, yeah most people puff faster than me..., I actually should speed it up a bit.
Yeah, I'm the opposite, I keep reminding myself to slow down. LOL
Haha, I get it... that is probably more common. As I'm sure you know, that balance between getting the cigar too hot, and having to relight is key, and it is a pretty wide range.
Nice post! Was interesting to read and informing. Thank you!
Thank you for reading!

Hey Greg!
This was cool. I never gave it much thought, other than some are bigger than others. Thanks for the flyby.
Glad you liked it!
It's probably a bit technical and unnecessary, but the words are tossed around everywhere in cigar land, and the shape is listed on almost all cigar descriptions.
Thanks!😤
