A Brief Cigar Review - Regius Robusto

Tonight I smoke the Regius Robusto, a cigar new to me. The United Kingdom-based Regius Cigars has been selling premium smokes for just six years, but only in the past four years has the company begun penetrating the U.S. marketplace. Regius cigars are rolled at Plasencia Cigars S.A. and made with tobacco from all over Nicaragua. Regius uses all parts of the tobacco plant, with various amounts of age (up to 15-years-old), and they are then covered in shade grown wrappers.

The cigar itself seems beautifully constructed with a reddish-brown wrapper. While not seamless, it is silky smooth, and feels very light in the hand. A small punch cut yields an clear draw. The Regius has pre-light notes of sweet fruity tobacco. I am curious to see if this follows into the flavor profile.

The Regius has a very unique main note.., It is a dark pungent fruit flavor. I would equate it to over-ripe fruit without the sweetness. The taste is something I imagine the outer fruit of coffee beans would taste like. I have no idea what that is, but it popped into my mind, probably due to the distinct coffee note that presents itself right after the dark fruit. Then a long finish of burnt cedar that lingers for a bit.

By the way, this smoke was thanks to the Seahawks winning over the Patriots in Foxborough earlier this season. The Regius (along with 4 other cigars) was payment from a bet with a buddy in Florida. He is a huge Patriots fan, and I've been a Seahawks fan since age six. But now the Seahawks are out of the playoffs, and the Patriots still in... oh well at least I have cigars.

Anyhow, approaching the midway point I observe new notes... burnt caramel that goes along with the cedar, at times they replace each other. Accompanying are overly roasted hazelnuts, and really dark mint zest. There is not an abundance of smoke coming from this cigar. I mean, it isn't sparse, but also not cloudy. Again I am surprised by how light the cigar feels in the hand.

An easy cigar to nub, it is very non-bitter at the end.
The Regius Robusto was a cigar I really enjoyed this evening, it was something new. The flavor profile overall was made up of dark notes; deep fruit, burnt caramel, dark cedar, etc. This dark flavor profile was different than what I am accustomed to, it was a more clear and bright darkness. Oxymoron I know, perhaps like Imperial Stout beer in comparison to Amber Ale. 

In any event, the Regius is a splendid medium body cigar with Cuban qualities at a decent price. The burn and construction were spot on. It's worth grabbing one or two, Regius is quite unique, but do not expect to be totally blown away.
