A Brief Cigar Review - My Father The Judge
The Judge by My Father cigars is the most recent offering from the company. It was released as a regular production cigar just last month, in sizes 6 x 54 and 5 x 60. They are larger ring gauge than I typically smoke, but the size fits the name. The Judge looks like it's going to be full flavored, full strength, and full body.
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Size: 6 x 56 (gordo)
MSRP: $12
Pre-light cold draw produces a sweet tobacco and slight cocoa note, with a scent of pungent raisin and earth.
The beginning of the cigar is surprisingly smooth, with very cloudy smoke output. I imagined it was going to be a cigar full of dark flavors and a lot of pepper. My Father cigars seem to have either a lot of spice, or almost none at all, depending on which cigar from the line you are smoking.
The main flavor jumping out at me is pure chocolate. There's also graham cracker, and a hazelnut nuance. The finish has a nice cream and mild spiciness. It all works well together for me, it's a great flavor profile with fantastic balance.
The profile remains the same throughout the cigar, with little changes not worth even noting. The flavors are abundant all over the palette, yet they are mellow flavors. The smoking time was about an hour and a half. There were a few burn line issues, but nothing that necessarily needed touch ups.
The Judge by My Father is a fine smoke. If you are in to anything by Don Pepin/My Father, then you definitely need to pick up this stick and give it a try. I love how My Father puts out such a variety of flavor profiles with each of their cigar releases, and they are all good. I have not had a Don Pepin blended cigar that I absolutely hate.
Although I would love to see The Judge in a smaller ring gauge, it makes sense that it is a larger, more prominent size with such a name. I guess they could have made a long 7.5 x 50 and it would still look mighty, maybe they eventually will.
My Father The Judge - 8.70 / 10
