A Brief Cigar Review - My Father La Antiguedad

in #cigars7 years ago (edited)

As a representation of the Garcia family's Cuban heritage, La Antiguedad, meaning 'The Antiquity,' joins Flor de las Antillas as the second box-pressed line from My Father cigars, and Don Pepin Garcia. It was once a Cuban brand, and employs Cuban-seed tobaccos in it's blend, The box utilizes the original Cuban artwork. A couple of years ago, when the La Antiguedad was originally released, it left me slightly underwhelmed. Today I revisit the La Antiguedad.

Wrapper: Habano Ecuador Rosado Oscuro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Vitola: 5 5/8 x 55 (toro)
Price: $8

The pre-light aroma has an interesting scent of very sweet raisin, much like the raisin is over-ripe and spoiling, a plum nuance also wafts from the opening at the foot. These scents do not translate to the taste buds, instead, a cold draw reveals more of an earthy note.

The artwork on the band is gorgeous and shows an amazing attention to detail, it's rather impressive. The cigar itself is eye pleasing with a smooth milk chocolate-hued wrapper that is slightly squishy to the touch.

A punch cut provides the ideal open draw. Upon toasting and lighting, the flavors develop into quite an interesting profile, major flavors I grasp include milk chocolate, graham cracker, and an odd fizzy note. I assume the"fizz" is the spice in the tobacco trying to portray itself to me, but it shows up like a soda-pops fizz, it is quite intriguing. The smoke output is substantially cloudy, and while on the palette, it feels heavy and chewy.

One third of the way into this lovely smoke, I notice the fizz and graham have all but departed, replaced by citrus and cedar undertones. The smoke remains full of texture, probably even more so, it coats my entire palette and lingers, yet the finish aftertaste is clean.

I am impressed with the straight burn line. The box press sticks from My Father tend to burn a little uneven, I presume it is due to the light pack.

Near the end, espresso makes an appearance alongside the other flavor nuances described earlier, although they are now muted, darker, and muddled together. The fizzy citrus spice returns for a final encore. I dig this flavor balance of chocolate, cedar, fizzy citrus, and espresso, the notes work together and make an interesting, yet delightful flavor profile.

The band was difficult to remove, I let the band slightly burn until the glue holding the band had warmed enough, so removal without tearing the actual cigar wrapper leaf was possible.

Final thoughts:

Overall, the La Antiguedad was a lovely smoke. When it was first released, I wasn't impressed, although I don't remember it being undesirable either. This time around I found it delectable, but unique, with flavor notes not usually found in the typical cigar. The soda-pop type fizz really stood out as supremely unique, the citrus matched well with that aspect. As most My Father cigars, there is minimal spice notes, those peppery blends seem to be reserved for their Don Pepin and Jamie Garcia line.

My emoji rating for My Father La Antiguedad: 😀

Ohhh
One I haven't encountered yet. I'll have to keep an eye out for them.
Interested in the " fizzy citrus" you described.
Thanks for the review =p

You should be able to find them almost anywhere. Haha, yeah that is the only way I could describe it. It definitely is not a black pepper, or spice typical to a cigar. Very light and "citrusy", yet full flavored and thick smoke.

I would love to hear what you think when you smoke one.

Might be a wile. I just quit smoking cigarettes in Jan. so I been trying not to take in any nicotine <,<
I have to smoke vicariously through you for now lol

Well done! I know many former cigarette smokers that used cigars to help them quit, but I am not going to encourage that... a total cleansing is probably a good idea.

The good news is that once your body doesn't crave nicotine anymore, the risk is low to become addicted to nicotine again with cigar smoking. Even though plenty of nicotine is absorbed through the mouth, the half-life is super short, it would take many cigars per day to get re-addicted. Good luck to you!
