The chrysanthemum is made up of up to 40 wild species and available in a wide range of colours.
Chrysanthemums are also known as “mum” and originate from China and the flower was brought to Europe in the 18th century and to the US a century later. The term “chrysanthemums” actually originates from Greek ‘khrusos’ meaning gold and ‘anthemon’ meaning ‘flower’.
The size depends on the species and the variety of the chrysanthemum. However, the stem can reach up to six inches in height and the flower diameter can be between 0.4 to 10 inches in diameter.
Chrysanthemums are known to be the birth flower of the month of November.
Chrysanthemums actually contain a chemical called pyrethrum which is known to actually repel bugs and remove toxins from the air.
The chrysanthemum symbolises long life, joy and optimism.
A great fact about this flower is that it is actually the longest lasting cut flower and can last well over two weeks. Therefore this flower is perfect for our homes as these flowers can be be displayed for such a long time!
