Christmas Goodies! Making Old Fashioned Candy Canes…YUM!
This weekend the family and I took a little stroll through the little town close to home. It’s called Leonardtown, MD. There we found a wonderful little candy shop called Heritage Chocolates.
Heritage Chocolates was established in 2015 and has brought handmade chocolates and confections to Southern Maryland. Initially, the Heritage menu offered classic chocolates and candies including caramels, brittles and toffees. The line quickly expanded to include enrobed Oreos, graham crackers, caramel apples and cream-filled chocolates. Heritage Chocolates aims to provide quality products that customers know and love, while continuing to develop exciting, new flavors. Today, the kitchen produces over 75 unique recipes.
We happened to find them on a day when they were making one of my favorite Christmas treats…Old Fashioned Candy canes. We got to watch as they poured out the heated sugar. We saw in amazement how they folded the sugar into itself to help add air and let it cool. Next, we watched as they added red coloring to ½ and peppermint juice to the other. And then they mixed, and mixed and folded and mixed. Finally, they assembled the pieces into a huge candy case from which the little ones were twisted and pulled from. The final step was to shape the candy canes into a design. The kids got to do that. Some made the normal shapes, some pretzels. My favorite shapes were the hearts.
All in all, it was a wonderful outing. When we got home we made some hot chocolate and enjoyed! It was great!
Take care!
