The Psychedelic Roots of Christmas and Christianity - A Brief (Visual) Introduction

in #christmas7 years ago (edited)

jesus.jpg

Everybody is in on Christmas, but nobody seems to know or care exactly why.

Why is so much importance placed on bamboozling us with the same commercials, programs and artificial norms once a year until we're all really glad when it's finally over again? And could there be some alterior motives behind the phenomenon other than good old profit motive...

As always this article is not the truth, just a freethinker's starting point. Take what resonates, leave the rest and do your own research if this introduction peaked your interest. My job here is to prospect paradigms - what you do with that information and how you might see it is completely up to you.

But we all got family meetings coming up and a lot of silly preparations to do, so let's dive in...

The annual tale of a bearded pathological altruist in a costume

...first of all, why the Santa thing? This unanimously-depicted bearded man with a belly sneaking into people's houses to bring them joy... How did that become a carrying myth in an age where we as a culture outright despise myths when we feel they are trying to bring us something other than mindless entertainment?

small_santa-clause-on-a-scooter.jpg

Why exactly is this Santa guy coming out once a year, dressed up in some aggressively red and white suit on which chimney stains would look horrible? What is the reason for his appearance if not pure Public Relations? And why is it such a persistent sight every year when nobody really knows anything about it, let alone how this might all have started?

Yes Ronald McDonald is recognizable worldwide as well, but the golden arches certainly didn't succeed in making their mascot hijack a major religion's holiday for generations to come, so what's the deal with Santa and Christmas?

Is Coca Cola really that powerful?

For me the most likely version at the moment is: Santa is a cover. To shield us from the actual roots. The more system-endangering roots. The roots that would blast much more to shreds than just Christmas if we ever started digging for real.

If we did, we might remember who we are. And where we came from. Little steps towards the groundedness with nature and the cosmos, instead of hurrying to buy material things that tend to get forgotten quickly when the season is over.

What do you propose then?

If you look below, you can see a Siberian shaman in his traditional outfit. The outfit is of course inspired by...?

Amanita Muscaria, a natural psychedelic mushroom that has been used for achieving altered states of consciousness for thousands of years - long before the church ever came to conquer the hearts and minds of the people in Europe and the rest of the Earth.

Siberian shamans are a topic in and of itself, I can just mention them in passing here, we'll get to them some other time. The customs have also been found in the Americas, far outside of Siberia (Northern Russia).

Just look at these two ;)

and here of course we have the totally unrelated mr. altruism himself,
but look - what's that in his hand?

Right right, anyone could have edited that picture...
If you ask me, the one with the bottle looks more fake ;)

So what's the big deal?

Well the big deal is that there is a myriad of literature and documentation on the psychedelic roots of Christianity that most people have never heard of. Who else recently has told you that Christianity might very well have started as a mushroom cult? And I only show a fraction of the pictures out there. Santa only knows how many more places there are!

Here we see photographs of Christian chapels and churches in Europe

You have probably recognized the two characters in these last ones, Adam and Eve. You know, the hippie couple that was quite alright until the lady decided to snack on the forbidden fruit...

Now look at the pictures again.

Needless to say if you have ever been on a psychedelic journey and never heard of this before you are celebrating hard right now. The "fruit of knowledge".

While I cannot say with absolute certainty that it is so, it certainly seems possible - if not likely - that these depictions of the fruit of knowledge show (or signify) a psychedelic mushroom.

A psychedelic mushroom, conspicuously identical to Amanita Muscaria, revered for thousands of years and eventually built into the architecture of chapels, monasteries and churches of Christianity, before it began to be coded more and more, until we now see apples depicted everywhere.

Which also has a nice side connotation on a certain company that some people seem to outright "revere religiously"

Anyway, it's safe to say there is a pattern here. And I find truth seeking is all about recognizing patterns.

The high veneration for Amanita has been more blatantly depicted in other cultures as well, such as in South America:

The pine cone is also one of these symbols that is often used around the world and yes... here is one pine tree connection to christmas. But, the pine cone is also the shape of a very important gland in our brains - the pineal gland.

Some people claim that this gland is 'the location in our brains' where naturally occuring doses of DMT - Dimethyltryptamine - are produced and released, leading us to dream every night and to sometimes mistake a nightly psychedelic trip for an alien abduction^^

But that is a topic for another day ;)

I say "some people claim" this, because the unscientific blanket ban on DMT - despite its natural occurence in our brains - has not only been the most obvious downfall for the credibility of "science" in recent decades, we can also not know this for sure (yet) because the ban has effectively halted all research in this area - except for a tiny amount of studies and experiments. How scientific!

The pine cone can be found in most of the spiritual sanctums and architecture around the world and has been a symbol for enlightened states of consciousness over millenia, maybe for longer.

It's quite interesting to note that DMT and psylocybin - the active psychoactive compound in many psychedelic mushrooms - are almost identical, chemically speaking. Famous psychonauts have not only mentioned the similarity of the two substances, but have even called them "cousins", leading to a similar place, if not the same one - if those depths of the mind could even be called 'a place'.

Pretty much the only solid research we have is Strassman's - what a sad state of affairs for our allegedly knowledge-oriented society. But Santa demands his cookies!

TheSpiritMolecule2010.jpg

While Amanita Muscaria has partially different active compounds than some of the more widely used magic mushrooms today it also contains DMT. It's important to note that many cultures - such as the Egyptians - had similar compounds they revered deeply for spiritual reasons. The concrete entheogen used would of course depend on what could be found locally, what would grow and what wouldn't, as well as knowledge on preparation techniques.

Much like the mushrooms, the reemerging symbol of the pinecone seems to be a constant in ancient human society, no matter where you look on Earth. The seemingly most different cultures came to see it as important - we might even say "crucial" - to the development of consciousness and the spiritual path, and undertook great efforts to work it into their architecture and art so that it won't be forgotten.

Similar to the church murals I showed above. Only we... have totally forgotten.

Just think of this when you see the next Santa commercial tomorrow: Ages ago it might very well have been a time where people got together to celebrate nature, life and the return of longer days at the solstice... by going on a psychedelic journey together in order to remember their place in the cosmos and what life is.

If that is true, look around you next time you are out shopping, and witness the madness.

See how far we have distanced ourselves from what our ancestors once deemed important. We could not be further away. But I have a feeling we're moving back to our roots again fast... or why else would you have read all this to the end?
