Hola amigos Steemianos! hoy antes que nada quiero desearles una Felíz Navidad a toda la comunidad Steem. Ademas voy a compartirles una historia del pesebre y en particular, la de mi amigo Elías Morales en la Isla Maraca, estado Zulia.
Hi Steemianos friends! Today, first of all, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas to the entire Steem community. Also I will share a story of the manger and in particular, that of my friend Elias Morales in Maraca Island, Zulia state.
Un hombre vestido con harapos remontaba una empinada cuesta en medio de una copiosa nevada. A pesar de su precaria vestimenta se comportaba indiferente a los rigores del frío. Al contrario, la figura de una cueva entre dos tupidos bosques de encina parecía infundirle aliento a medida que avanzaba. Sus roídas sandalias hacían crujir la nieve cuando marcaba sus pasos hacia la ermita de Greccio, donde esperaba reunirse con otros frailes de su orden. Se llamaba Giovanni Bernardote, pero pasaría a la historia como San Francisco de Asís. Nació de una familia acaudalada en Asís, al norte de Italia en 1182. Fundó la orden de los franciscanos y fue canonizado por la Iglesia católica en 1228.
A man dressed in rags was climbing a steep hill in the middle of a copious snowfall. Despite his precarious clothes he behaved indifferently to the rigors of the cold. On the contrary, the figure of a cave between two dense holm oak woods seemed to infuse his breath as he went. His gnawed sandals made the snow crack as he marked his steps to the hermitage of Greccio, where he expected to meet other friars of his order. His name was Giovanni Bernardote, but he would go down in history as San Francisco de Asís. He was born to a wealthy family in Assisi, northern Italy in 1182. He founded the order of the Franciscans and was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1228.
Quince días después de su llegada era 24 de diciembre de 1223. Greccio seguía tapizada por la nieve y en la humilde ermita varios frailes trabajaban muy duro siguiendo las instrucciones de San Francisco, quien contaba con la anuencia del papa Honorio III, para escenificar en vivo el primer nacimiento de la historia.
Fifteen days after his arrival it was December 24, 1223. Greccio was still covered by snow and in the humble chapel several friars worked very hard following the instructions of San Francisco, who had the consent of Pope Honorius III, to stage live the first birth of history.
Aquel día con la asistencia de la comunidad fue representado el nacimiento de Jesús tal como se narra en el Evangelio de San Lucas. Rellenaron una gruta con paja, trajeron un burro y un buey (aunque en el texto del apóstol no se mencionan) eran los animales utilizados para cumplir con las faenas del campo en esa época. Un puñado de pastores de carne y hueso complementaron la escena para darle una sensación de realidad. La única figura que no era humana en el pesebre era la del niño Jesús, pues era una escultura de barro moldeada –según la tradición– por el mismo San Francisco de Asís.
That day with the assistance of the community was represented the birth of Jesus as narrated in the Gospel of St. Luke. He also refers to the tradition that on that night when he was offering the Christmas Mass to honor the birth, a smiling and battered child suddenly appeared in his arms. Una de las razones que llevó a san Francisco de Asís a escenificar y después institucionalizar el nacimiento de Jesús fue acabar con las fiestas paganas conocidas como “Las Saturnales” que celebraban el 25 de diciembre (desde dos siglos antes de Cristo) con un banquete público en el Foro Romano en honor al dios Saturno De modo que a través del pesebre, la iglesia católica buscaba enraizar las verdaderas fiestas navideñas y darle aliento a la devoción en el Hijo de Dios.
One of the reasons that led St. Francis of Assisi to stage and then institutionalize the birth of Jesus was to end the pagan festivals known as "The Saturnalia" that celebrated on December 25 (from two centuries before Christ) with a public banquet in the Roman Forum in honor of the god Saturn So that through the manger, the Catholic Church sought to root the true Christmas holidays and encourage devotion in the Son of God.

Why is birth represented?
Según el Evangelio de San Lucas el emperador Augusto Cesar decretó que todos los que vivían bajo la dominación romana debían ser registrados en un censo. Para cumplir con ese mandato, José por descender del linaje del rey David, partió de la ciudad de Nazaret de Galilea para llegar a Judea junto a su esposa María quien estaba embarazada. Pero en la estancia de Belén, María dio a luz a su primogénito en un pesebre, ante la imposibilidad de hallar esa noche una posada.

Con el primer nacimiento escenificado por San Francisco de Asís en Greccio, Italia en 1223, comienza en el mundo esta hermosa tradición que llegó a América en tiempos de la Conquista instituida por los frailes franciscanos a fin de evangelizar a los reacios nativos. Fue más bien un hábil recurso para sensibilizar a los originarios quienes aún no conocían el idioma castellano en la cual se expresaban los pacientes capuchinos.
With the first birth staged by St. Francis of Assisi in Greccio, Italy in 1223, this beautiful tradition began in the world that arrived in America at the time of the Conquest instituted by the Franciscan friars in order to evangelize the reluctant natives. A partir de allí se arraigó por todo el continente llegando a tener en el tiempo distintas denominaciones: belenes, nacimientos o pesebres, como le decimos en Venezuela. A partir del 08 de diciembre, día de la Inmaculada Concepción hasta el 06 de enero, día los Reyes Magos se exponen en hogares y en diferentes establecimientos públicos y privados. El material usado para escenificar un pesebre también es de origen diverso: las imágenes pueden ser de yeso, plástico o madera, como las figuras que tallaba a mediados de los 70 el carpintero Elías Morales en la isla Maraca, ubicada a 80 kilómetros al norte de Maracaibo, Venezuela. Sobre su pequeña superficie se levantan cientos dos casitas. Al contemplarla en la distancia, y en medio de un largo y tupido cinturón de manglares, pareciera un verdadero pesebre a cielo abierto.

Lo hizo como pasatiempo durante treinta años mereciendo la admiración de los habitantes de otras islas vecinas quienes veían en los tallados decembrinos verdaderas obras de arte.
At that time Elías was a teenager and worked as an assistant to his father in a carpentry on the shores of Lake Maracaibo. With the pieces of boards left over from the construction of a barge, Elias carved the most representative images of the manger: The Virgin, Joseph, the baby Jesus, the donkey and the ox. He did it as a pastime for thirty years deserving the admiration of the inhabitants of other neighboring islands who saw in the December carvings real works of art.

Producía apenas cinco juegos de nacimientos que le tomaba ocho meses de trabajo y vendía antes del 08 de diciembre. Elías en la actualidad tiene 64 años, sigue construyendo chalanas y fabricando instrumentos de cuerdas. Pero ya no talla figuras para pesebres, pues la presbicia le ha impedido trabajar en detalles tan pequeños que han sobrevenido en varias cortaduras en los dedos. “¿De qué le serviría a un carpintero una mano sin dedos?”, dijo en tono jocoso, cuando lo llamé por teléfono este pasado, viernes 22 de diciembre.

Como ya no puede tallar más pesebres, Elías tiene el consuelo en noches de Navidad de acompañarse con su cuatro y cantar de casa en casa (junto a sus hijos y nietos) gaitas y villancicos para honrar el auténtico pesebre que aún vive fresco y luminoso en la vastedad de su memoria.
