December 23rd- Being a Peacemaker

in #christmas10 years ago

This initiative, and my time as guest host for @gavvet, may be winding down... but it's not over yet! There are still some great suggestions on how to be more mindful of others and make the world a better place.

Today's theme is about being a peacemaker.

Yet again this initiative shows why I enjoy it so much. "Making peace" is such a huge mountain to climb. If you think of it as this mountain, you many never start the overwhelming trek. However, if you look at today's suggested activities, you can find some small steps to take in order to start this journey. If enough people take enough of these small steps, perhaps we can make it up the mountain... together.

Even though I don't always get along with my in-laws, I am always respectful. I would never say anything negative about them in front of my children... but I also don't say anything very positive either. Today, I am setting a goal to say ten nice things about my in-laws "behind their back". I will make sure to do this while my kids are within earshot (or say it to them directly). I think my kids are going to get a real kick out of this.

Perhaps this video can help to inspire you to become a peacemaker...

This is the twenty-third way of serving in 25 ways over 25 days leading up to Christmas.

Would you like to become a peacemaker?

Its easy:
1. Watch the short clip
2. Follow the instructions
3. Make it happen
4. Then tweet or otherwise share your results using... #lighttheworld... encourage others to participate
5. 25 days is enough consistency to form a new habit

If every day this December we are slightly more mindful of others we may find ourselves with a new great habit to continue into the new year and beyond.

THREE SIMPLE WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

  • Do you owe anyone an apology? Resolve to take action.
  • Make a donation to help refugees from war-torn regions.
  • Say nice things behind someone’s back today.

OTHER WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

  • Jesus Christ offers us peace. Read John 14:27 and discuss with family or friends how to better enjoy the peace the Savior offers.
  • Take time to listen to someone with a different point of view. Don’t argue; just listen.
  • Bring more peace into your life with some calming music.
  • Help mend a rift between family members or friends.
  • Take a break from combative internet rhetoric for a day (or forever).
  • Offer a compliment or a smile to someone who is having a rough day.
  • Sit down with loved ones to plan a calming family getaway.
  • Visit JustServe.org for more ways to #LIGHTtheWORLD in your community (U.S. and Canada only).

This is a lovely initiative. Very apt at this time of year!

Thanks! The beauty of it is that I'm not even religious. The people who came up with this initiative are brilliant! There is something in it for EVERYONE. If you only have a few minutes, there are quick suggestions. If you have more time, you can string a few together or do one bigger one. They can be so simple that a child can understand them... or you can make them as deep as you'd like. They could involve religion or not. All it takes is a desire to be kind. I was so happy that gavvet brought it here. My family and I are having so much fun! I feel really lucky that gavvet asked me to help while he was gone. Yesterday, my wife, kids and I went and used the proceeds to buy a ton of breakfast food for a local food pantry. My kids LOVED shopping for breakfast food (since they could eat it for every meal). By the way, thank you for all of the support you give to anything around here that involves kindness. I hope you have a great holiday!!!

Thanks - Merry Christmas to you too:)

You're doing a great job @hanshotfirst. I'm so glad you are respectful to your inlaws....even if you don't like them. I like that very much :)

Thank you very much! I look at my wife's family as an extension of her. She's the mother of my children so I have to treat her right. Oh yeah and I love her.;)

Probably the best thing I have read all day!

Thanks! It has been a lot of fun writing these and sharing the ideas with my family. I am really happy that you enjoyed it.
