Daily Scriptural Reading - Self Control.

Today's Scripture:
When you stand before the king, don't try to impress him and pretend to be important.
It is better to be asked to take a higher position than to be told to give your place to someone more important.
Proverbs 25:6-7 GNT
Don't be too quick to go to court about something you have seen. If another witness later proves you wrong, what will you do then?
Proverbs 25:8 GNT
Never eat more honey than you need; too much may make you vomit.
Proverbs 25:16 GNT
Don't visit your neighbors too often; they may get tired of you and come to hate you.
Proverbs 25:17 GNT
If you cannot control your anger, you are as helpless as a city without walls, open to attack.
Proverbs 25:28 GNT
Self control is one of the virtues every man has to cultivate if he wants to make it out of life, because without that, you'll be carried away by every seemingly good thing in this world.
Prayer: Father, put in me the virtu of self control, cause my life to bring forth fruits worthy of you. Amen!

I forgot how much I loved Proverbs, especially Pv. 25:28.
It’s already powerful stuff, but with a more direct translation without any interpretive analysis added in from the original Hebrew it really hits you. My best translation would be as follows:
A Broken City, without a wall.
That is a man who has no restraint
Over his spirit.
It’s even more forceful that way, I think, because it isn’t just a broken-walled city, the entire city itself is broken.
And the city isn’t just vulnerable to attack. It’s broken, unlivable, and disgusting.
And it’s a restraint on the spirit, generally, that’s lacking, which broadens from just anger to all kinds of emotions that, without being constrained, cause humans problems.
Which means that the verse is teaching us, if a person doesn’t control their emotions (anger, sadness, despair, humorousness, etc...) then they are a broken person, desolate and destroyed, until they fix the breach and rebuild.
And like the broken city is unlivable for humans, the brokenness from not restraining one’s anger, sadness, despair, etc... makes the person’s body and mind unlivable for the soul itself.
Proverbs is really awesome, no?
