The Word of God is a consuming fire that has the ability to ignite and burn any refuse in your life. Fire burns! God’s Word is the instrument the Holy Spirit uses to touch and burn our consciences, so we become aware of all the things that are irritating to God and contrary to His will. Jesus wrote on the ground and His word was like fire and it burned the consciences of the scribes and Pharisees!

"Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?" - Jeremiah 23:29 KJV.

Does it burn in your conscience as you read? There are three illustrations of how God’s Word is like fire when we read and apply it to our lives it burns our conscience, showing us the things that are stinging to the Lord and leading us to do the things that are pleasing in His sight.

Fire purifies.God’s Word is an instrument the Holy Spirit uses to effect this purification in your life

"Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. - Psalm 119:9 KJV.

Regular studying of His Word brings about a purified life.

"Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." - 2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV.

The fire of the Word works for your purification and empowers your spirit, soul and body. Fire dispatch out an illuminating ray.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." - Psalm 119:105, 130 KJV.

Fire sheds forth light. That is the basis of our claim that the Bible is our all sufficient guide for faith and practice. If we decline its authority the result is darkness, for only God’s Word illuminates the individual Christian and groups of His people. If fire is added into a steam engine greater energy is generated and God’s Word in the hands of His Spirit energizes the will of the Christian. It gives us inward strength so that we desire not just to please Him, but also have the will and strength to do so.

Notice the psalmist’s continuous prayer, such as Psalm 119:28. He is saying, ‘Let your Word come to me like fire, to energize me and fortify my will…’ The word is indeed fire! Praise God!
