The Cross pt 2

The sacrifice of the cross is an amazing gift that allows us to have a relationship with God. The three scriptures below summarize some key points that build on yesterday's post.

“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

Paul highlights how all have sinned and cannot be righteous in their works of following the law. Only God is righteous and sending Jesus to die for our sins shows his righteousness in that the price of sin had to be paid for.

“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

One of the most popular verses in the Bible, especially among Evangelical Christians, is above. The cross does highlight God's love for us because he died for us. Ask yourself the question of who you would be willing to not only die for, but who would you die a death of crucifixion for? God suffered and died one of the worst deaths imaginable so that we might have a relationship with him. He did all of this while we sinned against him and we turned our back on him.

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. The cross of Christ reconciles all of us to God when we are joined with him in death. This happens through our baptism into his death (going to be covered in a future post). Salvation is also something that we can loose if we do not continue stable and steadfast in the faith.
