Definitions are important.....

...Because words have meaning.

These two words seem very similar, but by their definitions they are far from the same. Reminiscing can imply reflecting, but reflecting never implies reminiscing. If somebody says the word reminiscing, you could take what they said and replace the word reminiscing with reflecting and not change the implied meeting at all, whereas if you take the word reflecting and change it to reminiscing you can greatly change the implied meaning of their statement and make them say something they never said at all at that point. Here let us take a look at the definitions.

re·flect
rəˈflekt/
verb
2
think deeply or carefully about.
"he reflected with sadness on the unhappiness of his marriage"
synonyms: think about, give thought to, consider, give consideration to, review, mull over, contemplate, cogitate about/on, meditate on, muse on, brood on/over, turn over in one's mind; archaicpore on
"he reflected on his responsibilities"

rem·i·nisce
ˌreməˈnis/
verb
indulge in enjoyable recollection of past events.
"they reminisced about their summers abroad"
synonyms: remember, remember with pleasure, cast one's mind back to, look back on, be nostalgic about, recall, recollect, reflect on, call to mind
"we reminisced about Freddy's first Christmas with us"

As you can see by the definitions, the word reflect has no implied emotional tone to it, whereas the word reminisce has an implied happy or joyous emotional tone to it. These two words do not mean the same thing. If you replace the word reflect with the word reminisce you're adding an emotion to the statement that was never there in the first place. We should all be careful with the words that we say that somebody else said lest we condemn ourselves as liars because

“For by your words you shall be declared righteous, and by your words you shall be declared unrighteous.”
Mattithyahu 12:37 TS2009

To purposely twist somebody's words that they said to make them out to say something they did not, would be equated to lying or bearing false witness. This would be a violation of the ninth commandment of the Ten Commandments.

“You do not bear false witness against your neighbour.
Shemoth (Exodus) 20:16 TS2009

If you think about it though bearing false witness against your neighbor really boils down to not loving your neighbor as yourself and that would be a violation of this commandment.

‘Do not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people. And you shall love your neighbour as yourself. I am יהוה.
Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 19:18 TS2009

That is the same commandment that Yeshua the Messiah said was the second greatest commandment. This just goes to show that the words we speak are of grave importance but honestly this should go without saying because the scriptures tell us

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those loving it eat its fruit. Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 18:21

Hopefully you understand now why the definitions of the words we use are so important.

If what I said above really yanks your strings, just take this little piece of advice right here.

"Words mean things!"

Hardest concept to drill into our kids' heads. Ever.

"Let your yes be "yes" and your no be "no"!"

A wise parent I know summed up her best parenting advice this way, "Always say what you mean and mean what you say" and that is surprisingly hard advice to consistently follow!

Keep shining the light of Yeshua in everything! I know biting my tongue when certain people are around can be a challenge!
