According to the Insider,

• Arnold Putra, a reportedly wealthy Indonesian, has also claimed to use "albino skin" and "plastinated human remains" in his clothing.

• Putra told Insider he sourced the spine through medical surplus, but he wouldn't say whether it came from a child.

• The bag went mostly unnoticed for years. But after a widely shared tweet about it recently, people flocked to his Instagram page, where he posts travel pictures.

The item caused outrage online — and prompted Insider to find out everything possible about the item and where it might have come from.

The handbag is a $5,000 one-off piece by the designer Arnold Putra, which first went on sale in 2016. It is a basket-style handbag, with a handle formed of what appears to be a single human spinal cord. Experts told Insider they believed it was genuine.

Putra lives a flamboyant lifestyle, full of exotic travel, luxury, and high fashion. He was name-checked by the "Rich Kids of Instagram" account, and in 2017 he was described by Tatler Indonesia as one of "the most prolific car collectors in Indonesia."

He has been pictured with fashion celebrities like Michèle Lamy on his profile — @arnoldputra — which was made private during the course of Insider's research for this piece.

A second Instagram account, @byarnoldputra, details his fashion line. The posts include the spine handbag, which has also been marketed for sale on some fashion sites.

The @byarnoldputra post included a description that said the bag was, "Made of an entire child's spine who had osteoporosis." Putra told Insider this account was run by someone else and that he had "contributed" to it.

Putra did not say, despite several inquiries, whether the spine really belonged to a child.

According to the Insider,

The bag was part of an unfinished collection "involving similar materials unprecedented in garment-making," he said.

For the alligator tongues, he said they were byproducts of the alligator meat and leather industry. (Alligators are no longer endangered in the US.)

"It took a bit of experimenting to get the tongues flattened and supple enough," he said.

Following the social-media uproar over the bag, Putra posted an Instagram story in which he said, joking or not, that his collection was "derived from plastinated human remains and albino skin."

Putra suggested these items were also medical surplus, but he has not responded to a request for clarification.

The legality of buying and selling human bones varies worldwide. The trade is legal in numerous US states, according to National Geographic.

It is also legal in Canada — in 2017 the Global News TV network profiled SkullStore, store that sells human remains. Its website advertises a "child shrunken head" for just under 100,000 Canadian dollars.

This is an update to my story of 21 August 2013 about whether a Cardiff NHS Beauty Clinic doctor and the Head of Surgery at the Fujairah Hospital in the United Arab Emirates are selling items made of human skin.

I can now confirm that Dr Subash Gautam, who is not only Head of Surgery at the hospital, but also head of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) programme for the Middle East and North Africa, is the father of Dr Siddarth Gautam, the NHS registered doctor who runs beauty clinics in Cardiff and who has the same name as the person who set up the website for the human skin business http://www.humanleather.co.uk/using the same address as the hospital.

But there’s more! Dr Subash Gautam is also father of Dr Vikrant Gautam, listed along with his brother Siddarth as one of the doctors running the www.facialise.co.uk clinic and their mother, Dr Subash Gautam’s wife, is Dr Gursrup Gautam, the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Fujairah Hospital.

Now it may be that the Gautam family are the victims of a monstrous hoax, but even if they are running Human Leather, there’s no suggestion that selling shoes and wallets made from human skin is illegal or even unethical. Indeed the

Human Tissue Authority @HTA_UK , which regulates the use of body parts for research and transplantation in the UK, confirms that they do not even regulate such “unofficial” uses of human skin. However, before you or a loved one went to a hospital or clinic, wouldn’t you want to know if the doctors running it made large amounts of money on the side, from selling bits of dead people?

In their “frequently asked questions” section, they say that “Human Leather is produced from skin sourced from normal everyday people. These people have bequeathed their skin to us prior to their death.” They explain that the best areas of the body to source this skin are the back and abdomen as these allow “maximum usage when being crafted into large coverage items, especially satchels and briefcases”.

They stress that the practice is not illegal and that they “value our donors and reward their beneficiaries and next of kin very handsomely”. The items they offer include human skin wallets starting from €9,000, belts from €10,500 and shoes from €18,000. They also do a range of lucky chakra bracelets made of skin from the appropriate areas of the body to maximise yogic energy. Unusually, they offer no contact address, just an email.

Your first reaction to this may well be that it’s a hoax, but domain records show that the website was registered by Siddarth Gautam, a UK Individual giving this address:

PO Box 4848, Fujairah, United Arab Emirates

This happens to be the address of the Fujairah Hospital, one of the leading trauma and accident centres in the UAE. Working there is a very eminent doctor Dr Subash C Gautam (note the difference in name), who is Head of Surgery and Chairman of the Advanced Trauma Life Support program for the Middle East and North Africa. He even has his own Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subash_Gautam

Now for the UK connection: the Human Leather site is not the only one registered by “Siddarth Gautam”, there are five others sites he is responsible for including www.botox.co.uk and www.facialise.co.uk . This latter site says it will operate from the Rebalance Spa in Cardiff, offering a number of treatments including skin peels and microdermabrasion. The staff there are, somewhat unusally, listed only by first name and comprise: Dr Helen R, Dr Sid G and Dr Vic G. Public records show that Helen C Rimmer, Vikrant Gautam and Siddarth Gautam all lived at the same address in Cardiff in 2002/3.

We learn more about “Dr Sid G” at this site (as you can see from the photo, it’s the same person pictured at facialise.co.uk): http://www.wahanda.com/pro/drsid/details/ where we learn he is indeed Sid Gautam who:

“qualified from the acclaimed University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff in 2003. He is a fully registered NHS GP and skincare and anti-ageing specialist. He has performed thousands of specialist non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the UK and abroad. He is a trainer in Botox, Dermal Fillers, Lip Enhancement, Chemical Skin Peels and Skin Rejuvenation. Sid is the Founder of the highly successful Dermaskin Clinic chain – www.dermaskin.co.uk “

Now it’s only fair to say two things: (1) there is another address for the name Siddarth Gautam listed in Cardiff, the person there also being the director of a computer company, and it may well be that Dr Gautam, purely by coincidence, asked this other person to set up his clinic’s website, not knowing that he had also set up the Human Leather site. (2) There is no suggestion that the Human Leather site is doing anything illegal or even unethical: after all, it’s up to you who you leave your body (including skin) to, isn’t it?

However, before going to either the Fujairah Hospital for life-saving treatment or to any of Dr Sid’s clinics for skin treatment, wouldn’t you want to be reassured that they do not run a business selling human skin products for high prices? Otherwise, it would be like going to a dentist who ran a sideline in “ivory” products wouldn’t it? Don’t you think both the hospital, the Cardiff GP and the UAE medical authorities should explain their position on this, very clearly and openly?

Footnote: since this was posted, the website registration address for human leather has been changed to an address in India.

As far as the basement and the collapsing of the home to get one for this purpose,

Cosmetic surgeon Mr Gautum said the work was to make the house a six-bedroomed family home in the same 1920s style and the basement is for extras storage and a playroom for children.

A neighbour, who refused to be named, told of the 'disastrous' building work in Penarth and said it had been a nuisance to the street for more than two months.

He said: 'The work is precarious to say the least. I have already raised my concerns about it but couldn't do more to help.

'We have never met or seen the owner of the property but it is believed locally that he is a well off cosmetic surgeon.

'He has plans to completely change the use of the property and add ten rooms to the dwelling.'

Another neighbour said: 'The interior of the property has been virtually raped.'

Fire station manager Justin Jones said: 'This shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

'The site is still very dangerous and will be boarded up.

'We were alerted by the collapse by a work man who had come to collect some tools.

'He is believed to have been the only person on site but we have sniffer dogs at the scene to confirm this.

'Safety boarding to put up and the existing contractor has been sent off site.'

The hopeful notion that we can turn back the clock and combat aging isn’t new, and the possible anti-aging procedure that's gaining steam isn’t really that new either. The procedure that some think can be used for anti-aging purposes — or at least the regeneration of old and deteriorated tissues — is what’s called parabiosis.

Parabiosis is an experimental surgery that was first utilized in the 1864 by physiologist Paul Bert, according to Nature. Bert sought to conjoin two albino rats — using their skin — to create a shared circulatory system between the two animals. His experiment produced the desired outcome and the two mice’s bodies worked together to pump each other’s blood.

The practice of parabiosis eventually declined over time, but in the past few years, some scientists have revisited the procedure to see how parabiosis might be of benefit to the regeneration of deteriorated tissues in mice — and possibly beyond.

Studies aimed at finding the correlation between parabiosis and aging have led some to wonder whether the infusion of young blood into older individuals could be used to treat symptoms of aging in humans.

n 2013, Harvard Stem Cell Institute researcher, Amy Wagers conducted a study that explored the possibilities of parabiosis and anti-aging in mice, reports MIT Technology Review.

For Wagers' study, young mice and old mice were conjoined at the hip to link their circulatory systems to see if the blood of younger mice could serve as a sort of elixir to regenerate dying tissues in the older mice. The experiments were successful, and the elderly mice experienced a regeneration and strengthening of proper heart functioning.

MIT Technology Review reports that in 2014, Wagers conducted two further studies that were published in Science.

Wagers sought to show how the role of the protein growth factor GDF11 plays a part in parabiosis and the restoration of degenerated muscles and brain tissues due to aging. Her first study confirmed that GDF11 improved the muscle strength in older mice. Her second study showed that GDF11 can help restore the effects of the aging brain in mice. Her findings suggest that GDF11 levels decline with age and that the regeneration of GDF11 could play a significant role in combatting certain effects of aging.

It’s important to note though that “We’re not de-aging animals,” Wagers says. “We’re restoring function to tissues.”

Since the release of Wagers' research, some have attempted to capitalize on Wager’s work for the purpose of combatting the degeneration of tissues in humans. Startup companies such as Ambrosia and Alkahest have already begun clinical trials to see how findings from parabiosis research can make use of blood transfusion to restore and rejuvenate degenerative issues that arise with age.

*In 2016, Ambrosia began clinical trials that offer blood transfusions from the young to 600 patients who are age 35 and up and have $8,000 for the procedure. Alkahest’s goal is to see if young blood infusion can be of aid in combatting Alzheimer’s for those who have a predisposition to the disease.

The procedure and evidence is, of course, controversial. There hasn’t been enough time to really see any results, and the research remains inconclusive.

There have been studies conducted by scientists at Novartis that refute Wagers' results. Those studies claim that GDF11 levels actually increase with age. Scientists at GlaxoSmithKline and Five Prime Therapeutics have shown that administering GDF11 doesn’t improve the functioning of muscles in mice with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

So is young blood infusion the way to put the aging process on hold? Like many de-aging remedies, the jury still seems to be out on whether or not the transfusion of young blood into older individuals can actually produce any effect.

Yet people line up right and left for them! It is a major component of SRA.
