Saint Augustine says that if we're happy or comfortable with life, we won't remember that we're on a journey to Heaven; we must be dissatisfied with ourselves- especially with our sinful nature- so that we'll fight against sin and use God's grace to make ourselves better. Therefore, remind yourself from time to time about the imperfections of this life and the joys of the life to come. Make a list of '' Things I look forward to in Heaven'' adding at least one item every day for a week; then review it every now and then. This can motivate you to continue to grow in grace and to persevere when life becomes difficult.

Learn from the example of St. Thérése of Lisieux. Before she entered the Carmelites, she decided to pray for the conversion of sinners, and specifically for one hardened, unrepentant murderer who was sentenced to death . She offered many prayers and sacrifices for him and had the joy of learning that this criminal just before his execution, kissed a crucifix with reverence and begged God's forgiveness. Thérése was ecstatic: her first of many sinners was saved. To make your own goal possible, start with one particular person or objective, and take it from there, one step at a time.

O most gentle Jesus,

having redeemed me by Baptism

from Original Sin,

a firm hope, and perfect charity,

so that I may Love you,

with all my heart and all my soul and all my strength.

Make me firm and steadfast in good works,

and grant me perseverance in Your service,

so that I may be able to please You always.
