BIBLE DOCTRINE SURVEY - NAMES OF GOD Nr. 1

BIBLE Study.jpg

I pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal all that we are going to do in this studies.

1 Cor 2: 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

If you want to know God to His full extent then I am inviting you to do this studies with me. Today we start with a new series about the Names of God whereby He reveals to us who He is through His names in the bible. This is a series of studies not to be missed!

NAMES OF GOD

The names or titles given to God in scripture reveal much about His characteristics - who He is, what He is like and what He does. When the Bible uses the phrase the "name of God" or "in the name of the Lord" it refers to His total person - All that He is. And God's name is excellent and majestic.

Psalm 8:1 O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

THE 3 PRIMARY NAMES OF GOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

  • ELOHIM (God) = means "mighty or strong one"; it denotes the power and pre-eminence of God and is expecially used in relationship to creation and strength.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Psalm 68:1 Let God arise,
Let His enemies be scattered;
Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.

  • ADONAI (Lord) means "master, sovereign ruler or Lord" and generally denotes the authority and position of God.

Psalm 68:32 Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth;
Oh, sing praises to the Lord, Selah

Isaiah 6:8-11
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:
“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for Us?”
Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
9 And He said, “Go, and tell this people:
‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
10 “Make the heart of this people dull,
And their ears heavy,
And shut their eyes;
Lest they see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart,
And return and be healed.”
11 Then I said, “Lord, how long?”
And He answered:
“Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant,
The houses are without a man,
The land is utterly desolate,

Adonai is also more like a title than a name. It is rendered in the NIV as "Lord" When used of Jesus it not only denotes His position as Lord/Master but identifies Him with Yahweh/Adonai of the Old Testament.

  • YAHWEH or JEHOVAH (LORD) means most likely the self-existent one (I am who I am or I am the One) and denotes God's personal name and His eternality. It is often used in relationship to God as redeemer and covenant keeper. Yahweh is the most common name for God in the Old Testament. God's personal name was so sacred to most Jews that they feared to write or say it lest they misused it and usually substituted Adonai for Yahweh. Jehovah is an English word created from the other two to stand for God's personal name. The NIV renders Yahweh or Jehovah as LORD and when Adonai and Yahweh appear together it is rendered as "Sovereign Lord"

Genesis 2:4 This is the history[a] of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,

Exodus 3:14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Psalm 68:4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Extol Him who rides on the clouds,[a]
By His name YAH,
And rejoice before Him.

Jesus also used this name of Himself in Joh 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

Elohim is like a generic title for God while Adonai denotes His deity and position as sovereign Lord. Yahweh is God's personal, covenant name.

ASSIGNMENT
Put in the comments if you learned anything new today?

Previous post: participants who answer the question was @mistakili, @emekaorjianai, @nathansackey, @elplaga, @poimenpost, @addempsea and @warudo. Special thank you to @praise-eu for the encouragement!

I decided on @elplaga answers as the best answer.

How I will relate with God if he is a force or principle. Personally since force is something you can not resist, I will loss myself to his instructions (force) to the direction he wishes. Likewise his principles. But God is not an impersonal force as we have learnt, as he has presented us life and death and also urges us to choose life. How sweet he is.

I will be sending 0.200 SBD to @elplaga and a tip to all other participants.

I did this Bible School course more than 20 years ago over a period of 2 years, and it is now my privilege to share it with you.

יהוה Yod Hey Vav Heh
In modern Hebrew there is no “W” sound and the pronunciation of God's Holy Covenant name is Yehovah.

There is some evidence that in ancient Hebrew the Vav was pronounced as “Waw” and the "Tetragrammaton“ (meaning "the four letter word“) was pronounced Yahweh.

It is this form of God’s name, often referred to as the Ineffable Name, that is the most frequently used in the Bible. When you read the word LORD written in all capitals in an English translation of the Old Testament it represents Hebrew Covenant name of God. The primary reason for the use of LORD in place of God's Hebrew name is to follow the tradition of the Israelites in not pronouncing or spelling out God's name.

Orthodox Jews writing in English will omit the vowels when writing L-rd and G-d. Most often they will say, HaShem (the Name) instead of Yehovah because they stress the letter of the Law and do not want to take His name in vain.

Why not try Psalm 83:18 New world Translation Of The Holy Scripture That specifies Gods holy name which is Jehovah others are title you can confirm that because even Jesus was called Lord and Abraham was refer to as Lord by Sarah so would you say they were both called God since your article refers to the name of God as Lord

Dear @emar, these studies were compiled by Dr. Mock. Of course it is not the same when you call a person "lord" which also means "master" as when God is called "Lord" All the other names will follow. Other Old Testament names Yahweh/Jehovah compound names like Yahweh Jireh, Yahweh Rophe, Yahweh Nissi and lots more. Keep on following for the rest!

The New World Translation? You mean the bible that was re-written by the Watchtower Society (Jehovah's Witnesses)?

...the same people that predicted the end of the world/age at least six times?

Dear @overkillcoin, thank you for helping me out. I did not even know that was the Jehova's witnesses bible but I should have guessed! Blessings!

I DEFINITELY prefer the King James and New American Standard versions for accuracy and reliability *-)

Unfortunately, english does not translate from the hebrew adequately, so we cant appreciate the different words used to imply different categories and meaning.

Thank you @gpa1950 for your comment and contribution. Blessings!

Psalm 8 vs 1 says " O LORD our God, how excellent is your name in all the earth".His names are awesome. They describe who our God His. Who else can be called "I am" if not the one that was, that is, and will continue to be. THE GOD OF europe, Same living God in America. The God that is black in complextion because He created the Africans in His Image, The same white God that created the whites in His image. Mouths cannot describe you oh Lord of alll....

Thank you for your valuable comment @ayoyemi. God bless!

Goodday Ma, this bible study and teaching that you are passing to us here in the steemit platform will help the christian community to grow and spreed the word of God through out utter most part of the world....Thank you very much and I have learnt the different meaning of God's name from the old testament.

Thank you for your encouragement dear @anjiba. I really appreciate your comment!

It should be pointed out also that Elohim is plural, meaning more than one. Thus the first verse of Gods word points to the Trinity.
Looking forward to going through this series with you.

Yes, you are totally right @johncalvin I think I will mention this at the beginning of the first post. It was not so clear to me in the study material.
It says:

El (singular) and Elohim (plural) are usually more like titles than names. They may also refer to false 'gods'.

I did not understand the last part so I left it out. How can Elohim also refer to "false gods?" If you can shed some light for me, it would be much appreciated!

Elohim is a plural title not for a specific God, i.e. the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but gods in general (false gods). The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon explains that Elohim means:
1a) rulers, judges
1b) divine ones
1c) angels
1d) gods

In its usage in Genesis 1:1 it clearly refers to not just any gods (small G = false gods) but to Yahweh, and being plural, refers to the Trinity.

I hope this is helpful @hope777
