A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

Good day my fellow steemians, it's still your boy, your one and only fatherfaith. Yesterday, I posted a brief history of Martin Luther in celebration of 500years that he stood up against the teachings and the practices of the then Roman Catholics church. If you miss the post, here is the link to the post https://steemit.com/christian-trail/@fatherfaith/who-was-martin-luther

In the post I told us that Martin Luther was a great composer, he composed and wrote many great hymns. Today, still in the mood of celebrating him, I want to share with us one of the great hymns written by Martin Luther titled A mighty fortress is our God. This hymn is taken from the Baptist Hymnal (BH 40).

I chose to share this particular hymn because it is in line with my series on The doctrine of God. If you have missed the series so far, here are the link to The doctrine of God, series I https://steemit.com/christian-trail/@fatherfaith/doctrine-of-god and here is the link to series II https://steemit.com/christian-trail/@fatherfaith/the-doctrine-of-god-series-ii

A mighty fortress is our God (BH 40)

1

A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

2

Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

3

And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

4

That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.

May God bless you all through the lyrics of the song as you read

I am a keen admirer of Luther, and I am glad you throw the spotlight on his legacy with your series. Luther wrote this hymn at a time when the Black Plague loomed across Europe. He wrote it as a consolation to self and society, as many of his friends and friends of friends fell to their death from the terrible epidemic. Today, it will rings through and true as the truth that gives the bothered soul rest - that a mighty fortress is our God.

*still rings through

I love the melody, Ever since I was a child I've always been very attracted to melodies. Whether I hear a choir, an ocean or the wind, there's always a melody in there.
