WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LENT
The season of lent is the season of total abstinence as we all know. The season as some have mistakenly tagged it as a season when Christians must compulsorily abstain from food, but we need to know that abstaining from food is not the only thing rondo during this period of lent. The major thing we need to do is to
AVOID SIN
The number one thing that needs to come to our mind is the need to abstain from sin. This is even more important than doing away with food. Just like our Lord Jesus Christ said that:
What goes into the mouth of a man is not what makes him impure, but what goes out from the abundance of the heart.
Even when you abstain from food but do not abstain from sin, it is like suffering yourself intentionally without getting anything at the end of the day.
FOLLOWING THE STEPS OF CHRIST
During the season of Lent, we need to follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ who spent forty days and forty nights in the wilderness, shortly after his baptism done by John the Baptist. The period in the wilderness prepared him for his ministry, leading up to his sacrificial death and resurrection. After our baptism, we are alao sent forth with souls made pure and the flame of faith into the wilderness and darkness of daily life activities where we must bear witness to our Lord Jesus Christ the one we follow.
Jesus triumphed over the three types of temptations to sin
the world
the flesh and
the devil
and gives us a model of how to live in the world and not be of the world as Christians
1Jn 4:4; James 4:4).
PRAYER
Through our Lenten observances of prayer while fasting, we imitate Christ in casting away our tendencies to leave God out of all we do, we move closer to him in prayers. The cathecism of the Catholic Church defines prayer:
As the raising of one's voice to God. We get connected to him talk to him, and this is one other important thing that makes our fasting complete as Christians.
ALMS GIVING
givers never lack, as Christians we need to understand that beggars will always ask and so there is no excuse for you as a Christian not to give out. When we complement our fasting with prayer and with alms giving; then everything is complete.
May Jesus help us through our Lenten observances to gain self-mastery, reflect on our need for God and receive all that we need for ourselves and those who look to us for their needs. Amen!!!
