With the breaking news out of Las Vegas overnight of the horrific mass casualty event emotions of all sorts are running high today. Fear, anger, bitterness, grief, sorrow, mourning, confusion, heartbreak, and many more have been stirred up in the consciousness of Americans. Let’s take some time this evening to look beyond the politics, blame, and castigation to ask a question that demands to be addressed but that typically is overshadowed by other concerns: what is life worth? What do our worldviews tell us about what life actually is, where it comes from, and what its ultimate value is? Something instinctive tells us that life is valuable and worth preserving, so how can people – ourselves included – come to a place where we see life as something that would be better off eliminated?
