Aleksa's Book Review: The Third Revolution

in #china6 years ago

China's at the tip of everybody's tongues and with good reason. From the "Asian Century" to the belt and road, everybody knows full well that the place with the most people and most growth is posed to become the capital of the world. So, what does the term "Third Revolution" even mean for the reader?

The first revolution, in this case, was the Chinese Communist revolution in the early 20th century, where the Republic of China was exiled to Taiwan. The second is the reform system implemented by Deng Xiaoping, and now comes the third revolution under uncle Xi - primarily through the belt and road.

This book explains the background highlighted above, as well as the internal workings of the Chinese Communist Party - the politics on the inside are about as opaque as the ones with outside states. A lot of time is spent on explaining China's move toward greener energy and moving manufacturing away from China - and transferring the gains to the populace.

It's also highly relevant that China is implementing not only a social credit system, but also a comprehensive set of incentives that will nudge the nation toward more incremental innovation (of the nature undertaken by IBM in the 70s) that is tested through market use, as opposed to massive projects that underlie testing and academic rigour. I can't disagree.

The book gives a few angles of China that few other books do, but a lot of it falls fat in terms of what is to be done about any of it. Definitely a necessary read for understanding the nature of China, but other books will have to be used in order to properly understand how to act in reaction to China's great awakening.
