How the forest was rescued - Grandma stories for the young
The rescue
Billy the wolf had an uncanny sense of danger. He could see that the sky was of a peculiar color. It was as if it was full of water that was about to overflow. It was true in a sense. It had been raining non-stop for about two months now and there was no sign of a sunny day.
The river in the forest was about to spill over. The animals were scared to go over to drink water. The crocodiles were happy though and lay awaiting any stray animal who dared to approach the water.
Almost all animals were suffering because of the excess water. The mango and the jackfruit season was over and the fruits that were left were the guavas, the berries, and bananas. Even then, the bats attacked the fruits and it fell down and rot in the rainwater. Life had indeed become difficult.
Billy woke up one morning and knew something was different at once. He heard the animals rushing past him. He stopped a squirrel and the little one replied that the dam had broken and water was rushing towards the forest. The animals were running towards the nearby hill so that they could escape the deluge.
Billy could have run away too but he ran towards where his friends had camped. The elephants. He approached the leader and asked him to help save the forest. The elephants agreed and they quickly went with Billy towards the direction from where the water was approaching. The elephants uprooted trees which were quite old and of no use and blocked the path. The saw the water was rushing forth but lined up the uprooted trees and also piled small trees above it. Billy had mounted one of the elephants. The water had come to where the elephants stood now but the trees blocked the furious surge and the water was diverted on another path.
The forest had been saved. The animals were safe. The animals thanked both Billy and the elephants.
