Goth (Totally Black) Chickens
One of my customers has several different breeds of chickens, but the one that caught my eye was the Ayana Cemani. I’ve been trying to catch the owner(s) at home to ask if I could photograph their unusual chicken.
The Ayana Cemani breed is rare and in poultry circles it’s frequently called the “Lamborghini” of the Chicken world. It’s origin is in Indonesia. Breeding stock can cost as much as $2,500.00 per bird in the United States. Regular non-breeding chickens can be found for $300.00 to $500.00 apiece.
You are probably asking yourself, is it a chicken that runs super fast. Nope, it’s one that is totally black, from its tail feathers to its bones and internal organs. It’s beak (inside & outside) and tongue are completely ink black. They have a dominant gene that causes this hyper-pigmentation (Fibromelanosis).
Ayam Cemani are known as much for the mystical powers of their black meat as they are for their ink-black feathers. They have a metallic looking sheen of green and purple.
One poultry farm in the U.S., Greenfire Farms, was able to locate and legally import the first pure bred bird despite a USDA export ban on importing live chickens from Indonesia.
Ayam Cemani are friendly birds, hens lay 60 to 100 cream-colored eggs during their first year. A typical laying cycle lasts for about 20 to 30 eggs, then the hen will stop laying for three to six months. The eggs are large in proportion to the size of their body.
Kadaknath, a breed found in India and the Silkie from China are the other breed of chickens having black skin, black flesh, and black bones. Silkies can and do have fur-like white feathers or black feathers.
Yes, I know that this chicken price is higher than cotton other chickens

I'd heard that breed name before, but didn't know they were that 'deeply' dark. Very cool - especially the metallic sheen.
