We used to have a rooster that was so mean we had to keep our chicks in a separate pen when they went outside. It took a while before they could all free range together. He kept them protected though and once faced down a fox from 6 feet away so they could run to the coop for safety.
My husband chased the fox away and we haven't seen him since.
Here he is as a youngster:
I had a rooster named king. He really thought he was king. He hated everyone. I had to knock him out about once a month just to keep him inline. Haha
