My Silver Spangled Hamburgs (SSH) known as the dalmatians of chickens, are among my favorites in my free-ranging flock.  I purchased the chicks three summers ago from a local breeder who was getting out of the breed, due to their ability to fly, he was having difficulty containing them.
My experience is that SSHs are alert, nimble and can evade predators.  They retain many characteristics of wild chickens.  They can fly, are great foragers and they brood their chicks without human intervention.  The rooster helps with the rearing of the chicks.
My two SSH hens have each brooded large hatches of 18 or more chicks.  Each summer they both tend to create a nest, they return to the nest each day to add an egg.  Once they decide they have enough eggs, they will sit on the eggs and incubate them for 21 days, until the chicks hatch.  Once the chicks hatch the mother hen will teach the chicks how to find water, forage and seek shelter.  Her main duty is to keep the chicks warm enough and protect them from harm.
