Mining for gold

I literally have no idea what this puzzle is about and from the looks of it, i can't possibly guess what it is, I guess that we can only solve it to find out

Now I see the value of sacrificing pieces in order to gain a better position, in this case to have several pieces attacking the king while the opponent has a lot more pieces than me but no way of getting them in the action.
