Iodine In Two Different Solvents

WP_20160412_005 (507x640).jpg

I took a photo where iodine is dissolved in two different solvents - hexane and water. These solvents doesn't dissolve each other, so they can be in one beaker for better visualization.

In this photo the top layer is iodine dissolved in hexane and the bottom layer is iodine dissolved in water. And you can see the difference in colors. Top layer is dark purple and the bottom is yellow.

Hexane is better solvent for iodine because it is non polar (water is polar solvent). Iodine in hexane dissolves ~35 times better than in water.
