RE: Chemistry Lesson: Part 3 (The Periodic Table and Nomenclature for Molecular and Ionic Compounds)

so, in this case, the empirical formula for glucose - C6H12O6 - would be CH2O?

I never learned about this. In fact I almost failed high-school chemistry. After graduating from my bachelors I started teaching myself biochem - as a side passion. looking forward to your answer and to future posts on this!

That is correct, the empirical formula is the lowest whole number integer, in that case you could divide each by 6. CH/2/O is the smallest whole integer ratio for that compound (glucose).

Biochem is my true love! I hope to continue discussing multiple avenues of science so perhaps as certain series wrap up I can begin others. I would like to talk more about protein structures for people, and hopefully shed more light on both what proteins are, and the various aspects to their structures.

So many fascinating topics that people can delve into, and with just a bit of background on each a whole new world can be opened up.

you could get me hooked if you talk about protein folding :D
