Pineapple Fund - Donating $86 million of Bitcoins to Charity

"On a larger scale, the Pineapple Fund created a more mysterious form of cryptocurrency philanthropy.

The organization was started in December by an anonymous donor who goes by the nickname “Pine” and claims to be among the 250 largest holders of Bitcoin in the world. The fund aims to give away $86 million worth of Bitcoin, and has already given $20 million worth of the currency to 13 organizations, including million-dollar donations to the Water Project, which provides clean water to people in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights watchdog.

(These donations can be verified thanks to Bitcoin’s digital ledger system, which records every transaction in a public database.)

Whoever Pine is, he or she seems to have found a way to convert Bitcoin into something actually useful."

New York Times, Dec 27 2017

The Skinny

  • A user by the name of "Pine" was an early adopter if Bitcoin.
  • They now have more money than they will ever need.
  • Instead of hoarding their millions, they have decided to create a charity fund called the "Pineapple fund".
  • This charity plans to give away 5,057 BTC ($86 million USD!).
  • They have already donated $18 million since December 2017.

An update from Pine himself:

"Hello! I'm back with another update to the Pineapple Fund. With Christmas and New Years out of the way, PF is ramping up and looking to finish reviewing all applications and get back to shortlisted charities in the coming week.

If you've applied and haven't heard back yet, we're still going through them! There's been more than 10,000 applications; thank you volunteers for PF <3

Quill.org is helping 700k students learn writing and grammar, with their free tools. We donated $1 million to help them develop a new open source educational model that teaches kids critical thinking and sentence comprehension.

We donated $1 million to Possible, an organization delivering integrated and scalable healthcare in Nepal. Possible uses data to optimize a hospital-to-home care system, and is backing it with a long-term revenue source, to build a scalable model that scale for millions to access quality healthcare.

We're making donations to the Software Freedom Conservancy, home to projects like Git, Homebrew, QEMU, and Selenium; and Wings for Conservation, which is providing aerial support against elephant poachers in Chad.

B2C2 has graciously offered to exchange bitcoins for PF charities at cost. This is an incredibly generous offer, so I think they deserve a shoutout! If you're looking to cash out (or cash in), skip the exchanges and check out B2C2 :) /u/zanetackett"

Please keep in mind that the Pineapplefund will never give to an individual. They will only sponsor registered charities. Please do not go over there and beg for bitcoins.

I posted this because I think it's great to see the crypto community giving back. There is a lot of hate coming from the media, painting cryptocurrency as a tool of pedophiles and drug dealers.

I am very thankful that there are users in the community like Pine!

Thanks for posting this. I'd seen a little bit about the Pineapple fund before but didn't really understand that it came from an early adapter of Bitcoin. I agree that it's good for the crypto community as well because it promotes it in a more positive light.

Media guys are mostly dishonest.. Keep up the good work and contribute for a good cause .

Great post bro keep going

Got to have a big heart to help others especially by giving away which is having monetary value.
Lot of them tend to do help in many ways but monetary gift plays a very big role if the funds are used right. Good post.
