On August 23, 2023, the Lander Vikram and Rover Pragyan of India successfully completed the first soft landing on the South Pole of the Moon. The third Indian lunar exploration mission under the ISRO Chandrayaan programme, Chandrayaan-3, arrived at the moon after travelling there for about 40 days.

The primary goal of the mission is to investigate water-based ice, which would enable human living on the Moon and provide rocket fuel for spacecraft travelling to Mars and other far-off places. Chandrayaan-3 cost 615 crores in total. Indian scientists were able to make history by overcoming their failing concerns thanks to the mission's success.

American politicians, newspapers and space research institutions hailed India Wednesday on the successful Moon landing of Chandrayaan-3 as the country entered the elite club of three other nations — United States, Russia and China that have a rover on the lunar surface.

In the process, India became the first country among the elite group to have its rover on the Moon's south pole region, which the Indian Space Research Organisation believes could have traces of water.
