A sparkling new operating system – it’s really speedy
My dad’s PC was not going too well the lad time I visited, so I said bring it down when you come to Wellington for my sister’s birthday party – which is tonight.
So he did. I picked it up from his this afternoon and spent the afternoon rebuilding it.
I put in a new SSD and installed Windows 7 and MS Office – both are fully licenced genuine versions.
I then had to copy all the files from his old hard drive across to the new hard drive.
The plan was to have the old hard drive as a slave, but the box just isn’t big enough for that.
Thanks to my previous computer meltdown, I now have the gear to do that really easily.
So it was a simple matter of dropping his old hard drive into my docking station, and copying the files to a removable drive, then plugging that drive into his machine and copying the file over.
He now has a brand new OS install on a fast hard drive, and all his old files.
So he should be good to go to start writing Steemit posts as soon as he gets home.
The most surprising thing about all of this is how smoothly this all went. I’ve done OS installs many, many times and they usually don’t go this well. there is always something that screws up. But this time it seemed sweet.
Happy with that.
So now it’s time to jump into the shower and head over to my sister’s place to wish her a happy 50th, and give my dad his computer of course.

Ubuntu is better, faster, virus free and more secure. But that's non of my business.
I quite like Ubuntu - but my dad is used to Windows, and the games etc he has are all Windows games (which he will re-install as soon as he gets home).
Ubuntu is fine f you don't minds doing a bit of tinkering and have plenty of confidence installing stuff from the command line.
But it's just not simple enough for someone who is not a geek to use.
It's certainly better than it used to be, but still not quite as easy as Windows.
Just try it. Nowadays is very user friendly, i would say more than windows, it actually resembles Mac OS in some ways, it's very easy to operate. You don't need to write any command lines anymore, everything is automated with GUIs. There is nothing that complicated really. There's an icon, you click on it and it runs. As simple as that. You don't need to search the net for apps, you have everything in their 'app store'. There are Windows based themes for Ubuntu. You can find lost of games, plus you can play online so many games.
I guess for an elder it's harder to get used to new things, but sometimes it's worth a try.
Thanks for that.
Let's see how he gets on with this one. Maybe for the next one I can try Unbuntu on him and see how he goes ;-)
You can try it on a live usb stick, you don't even have to install it. Good luck.
I thi k the human brain is like a hard drive , when it is new it is real wizzy , can do anything instantly , then it gets a bit fuller and the commands get slower eventualy the little red light comes on , the brain is getti g full . How did I do that becomes a mission ,havi g started with hexadecimal many years ago , windows is far enough to go , these days the computer is mainly used for games anyhow ,
Remember the days of forgetting the ethernet driver?
But that's the thing - when I did this to my own PC a little while ago I had all sorts of issues with drivers.
But for my Dad, no problems at all.
